  • Baghdad residents express fears of Sunni militants' advance on the capital

Baghdad residents expressed their fears on Friday after Sunni militants captured two towns in an ethnically mixed province northeast of the capital. The fresh gains by insurgents - spearheaded by fighters from the al-Qaida-inspired Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant - come as Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's Shiite-led government struggles to form a coherent response. The militants overran the country's second-largest city of Mosul, Saddam Hussein's hometown of Tikrit and smaller communities, as well as military and police bases - often after meeting little resistance from state security forces. The fast-moved rebellion triggered fear and uncertainty in Baghdad on Friday, when security was tight at mosques. "I used to go every Friday to al-Ghazil market (Baghdad's famous animal marke...

This, in addition to housing several key academic institutions (e.g. House of Wisdom), garnered the city a worldwide reputation as the "Center of Learning". Throughout the High Middle Ages, Baghdad was considered to be the largest city in the world with an estimated population of 1,200,000 people. The city was largely destroyed at the hands of the Mongol Empire in 1258, resulting in a decline that would linger through many centuries due to frequent plagues and multiple successive empires. With the recognition of Iraq as an independent state (formerly the British Mandate of Mesopotamia) in 1938, Baghdad gradually regained some of its former prominence as a significant center of Arab culture. In contemporary times, the city has often faced severe infrastructural damage, most recently due to the 2003 invasion of Iraq, and the subsequent Iraq War that lasted until December 2011. In recent years, the city has been frequently subjected to insurgency attacks. As of 2012, Baghdad was listed as one of the least hospitable places in the world to live, and was ranked by Mercer as the worst of 221 major cities as measured by quality-of-life. En 866, 'Al-Musta`in fut destitué puis exécuté.

"I used to go every Friday to al-Ghazil market (Baghdad's famous animal market) and I used to see a large number of people there," said one man. "I went today, but the market was deserted. No one was there. All the people are afraid now. Some of them have already gone to the Kurdistan region and others went abroad." The insurgency, which also draws support from former Saddam-era figures and other disaffected Sunnis, has emerged as the biggest threat to Iraq's stability since the US withdrawal at the end of 2011. It has pushed the nation closer to a precipice that could partition it into Sunni, Shiite and Kurdish zones. "Ask any Iraqi or anyone from Baghdad, and they will tell you that it is a pre-meditated plan to divide Iraq along ethnic and sectarian lines," one resident argued. http://www.democracynow.org - Secretary of State John Kerry made a surprise trip to Baghdad today to meet with Iraq's Prime Minister Nuri al Malaki. Ahead of his arrival, Kerry signaled the Obama administration is prepared to drop support for Maliki, calling for leadership "prepared to represent all of Iraq." Kerry's visit comes as Sunni militants with the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria have captured more territory. Over the weekend, ISIS militants seized three border crossings with Syria and Jordan, as well as four nearby towns. An Iraqi government air strike, meanwhile, has reportedly killed at least seven civilians and wounded 12 others in the ISIS-held Tikrit. Residents say army helicopters fired on civilian cars lined up at a gas station. The Iraqi government is claiming it only killed insurgents. We go now to Baghdad to speak with Patrick Cockburn, Middle East correspondent for The Independent.
